Mind-Body Medicine focuses on the interactions between mind and body and the powerful ways in which emotional, mental, social and spiritual factors can directly affect health.
Mind-Body Medicine enhances a person’s capacity for self-care and self-awareness. These techniques include meditation, guided imagery, hypnosis, relaxation, mindful eating, biofeedback, and the use of drawings, journals and movement to express thoughts and feelings.
Thousands of studies published since 1960 demonstrate the efficacy of mind-body medicine in relieving insomnia, anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and in lowering blood pressure and stress hormone levels, relieving pain and improving immune functioning.
Studies show up to 80% of all illnesses are related to chronic stress. The goal of mind-body techniques is to get the body and mind to relax and to reduce the levels of stress hormones in the body, so that your immune system is better able to fight off illness.
Mind-body techniques may help treat many different diseases, including:
- Cancer
- High Blood Pressure
- Ashma
- Coronary Heart Disease
- Obesity
- Insomnia
- Diabetes
-
- Pain and Nausea/Vomiting Related to Chemotherapy
- Fibromyalgia
- Stomach and intestinal problems (including indigestion,
irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea,
ulcerative colitis, heartburn, and Crohn's disease)
- Menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, depression,
and irritability
- Mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression
I have trained with Dr James Gordon, renowned expert in using mind-body medicine and Founder and Executive Director of the The Center for Mind-Body Medicine. I regularly use the techniques I was taught and also documented in his book Unstuck, Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression.
